Lionel Messi is an Argentine soccer player who primarily plays the position of forward. Born on June 24th, 1987, Lionel Messi started playing for FC Barcelona during the 2004 to 2005 season. That very year, he became the youngest player to ever have scored a goal for that team. He was only seventeen. In addition to being recognized as a successful player at a very young age, Messi has also achieved other accomplishments as well.

Lionel MessiIn addition to being a star on the FC Barcelona team, he is the captain of Argentina’s national team. At the age of only twenty one, Lionel Messi was nominated to receive the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the year awards. However, he did not win these awards until the following year. In 2009, he won both of these prestigious titles. He was the Ballon d’Or again in 2010 and 2011. Only one other player has been able to win this award three times in a row, and only three other players have ever won this award a total of three times. Thus, these awards place Messi in a very elite category. He also was awarded the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for the years 2010 and 2011. He has won five La Liga titles and three Champions League Cups. He is one of the only players in the world to have been the top scorer in three Champion Cup games in a row.

Lionel Messi started playing soccer at a very young age. It did not take long for Barcelona to notice his great playing skills. He struggled with a growth hormone deficiency problem which forced his family to move from Argentina to Europe to pursue treatments. The director of the Barcelona team, Carles Rexach, offered Messi the chance to play for Barcelona’s youth academy, and he also promised to pay for Messi’s medical treatments. After receiving this offer, young Messi and his father moved to Barcelona in 2000. Messi was only about thirteen.

His third season playing for FC Barcelona was the season when fans and others really started to notice him. During the 2006 to 2007 season, he played regularly, and he even scored a hat-trick (three goals) in El Clasico. By the end of the season, he had scored fourteen goals in twenty six games. The following season was even more impressive. He scored a total of twenty eight goals. Although that record breaking season was impressive, he was even more impressive the following season. The following season, he scored forty seven goals, and the next year, he scored fifty three. Now, he holds the record for scoring the second highest number of goals for Barcelona.

As a player for the Argentina team, Lionel Messi has also achieved many accolades. He became an important member of Argentina’s senior team while he was quite young. In 2006, he was the youngest Argentine to ever play for the team in the FIFA World Cup. In 2008, he won an Olympic gold medal playing with Argentina’s Olympic football team. In spite of his long list of accomplishments, he is still young, and he will probably achieve much more during his career.

Messi is just above average without Xavi and Iniesta, that’s why his performance is less than stellar in the Argentinian national team. He’s very good at ball control, but he is below average in the air. Out of 26 penalty kicks, he has failed to score 7.
