Sergio Ramos: Spanish Star

January 31, 2012 No Comments »

Sergio Ramos is a twenty five year old Spanish soccer player who currently plays for Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. Primarily, he plays as a right back, but he sometimes plays as a central defender. Arguably, he can play either of these positions very competently.

Sergio RamosBefore joining Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, he played as a youth through Seville’s youth system. He was born in Seville, and he started his career at Seville FC. During the 2004 to 2005 season when Sergio Ramos was only eighteen, he played in thirty one games for Seville FC. That year, that team qualified for the UEFA Cup. The following year, when Sergio Ramos was only nineteen, Real Madrid bought him for 27 million Euros. During the EUFA Champions League losing game, he scored his first goal for Real Madrid.

During his first few seasons on that team, Sergio Ramos played the position of center back. However, when Metzelder and Pepe joined the team during the 2007 to 2008 year, he was switched to the position of right back. Although he was a defender, he displayed an exemplary scoring instinct, and he made over 20 goals during his first four seasons with Real Madrid.

On May 4th, 2008, Sergio Ramos passed an assist to his teammate Higuain during the last minute of a match against CA Osasuna. This goal won Real Madrid the game with a score of 2 to 1, and it earned Real Madrid their 31st league championship. During the 2009 to 2010 season, he became one of the four captains of Real Madrid. In 2010, he played his 200th game for his team. During that time, he earned several different awards and recognitions.

In 2008, he was named to the Team of the Year for both FIFA and UEFA. In 2008, he earned 21st place in the European Player of the Year contest. However, not all of his recognitions were positive ones. In 2010, after being sent off the field for a foul against the FC Barcelona player Lionel Messi, he earned the record for the highest number of red cards for any Real Madrid player. The previous record holder had played a total of 264 more games. Thus, Sergio Ramos’s red cards were earned over a substantially smaller time frame. In 2011, Sergio Ramos signed a longer contract with Real Madrid which sealed his fate with that club until 2017.

His international career has been just as exciting as his club career. He played six international games with Spain’s Under-21 team. Just four days before his nineteenth birthday, he made his first appearance on the senior side of the Spanish national team. Playing a friendly game against China, he helped his team win with a final score of 3 to 0. At that time, he was the youngest player to have ever played for that team.

Four years later, during the 2008 UEFA qualifying games, Sergio Ramos was a regular starting player on the Spanish national team. Over eleven appearances, he scored a total of two goals. In the last stages of this tournament, he played almost every minute of almost every match, and he helped his team win a victory over Germany. He was also an integral part of the 2010 World Cup games, and he helped his team win against Holland with a score of 1 to 0.
