The Career Of Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is a popular soccer player. He was born in October of 1985, and he is from England. He plays for one of the top clubs in England, Manchester United. He is also a part of the England National Team. He plays the position of forward, or striker. As a striker, he is closest to the other team’s goal, and is primarily responsible for scoring. The position of striker is demanding, requiring both quick decision making and physical speed.

Wayne RooneyIn 2003, Rooney became the youngest soccer player to represent his home country of England, although another player later broke this record. Rooney competed in the World Cup in both 2006 and 2010. He is often regarded as England’s best soccer player. In fact, he received the honor of being named England’s Player of The Year in 2008 and 2009.

Rooney first began playing soccer on a youth squad called Liverpool Schoolboys. As a child, his hero was the famous footballer, Duncan Ferguson. While playing for the Liverpool Schoolboys, Rooney set the record of scoring the most goals in one season with 72. This record was not broken until 2010. When he was nine years of age, he played for the Copplehouse Boys’ Club, where a scout for Everton discovered him. Everton is a professional club based out of Liverpool. He joined Everton at that time. He scored 114 goals in the under 10s and 11s competition. By the time Rooney was 15, he was a fierce competitor in the under 19s competition.

When Rooney was 16 years old, he scored a last minute goal against rival club, Arsenal. The goal won the game for Everton, and made him the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League. This record has since been broken twice. In the same season, he was the only person to score a goal in his team’s 1-0 victory over Leeds United.

Along with being known as a relentless scorer, he is known for his ability to get red carded. He is recognized as one of England’s most red carded players, and he has been thrown out of games on two separate occasions. He received his very first red card penalty on December 26, 2002.

By the 2004-05 season, Rooney was an established professional player and many clubs were interested in signing him. In 2004, his agent turned down a three year contract offer from his team, Everton. This left two clubs competing for Rooney, Newcastle United and Manchester United. At the end of the bidding war, Manchester United won out and Rooney signed with the club in August 2004. At only 18 years of age, he had managed to receive the highest salary ever given to any player under the age of 20. The deal was for £25.6 million.

Since that time, Wayne Rooney has played several seasons with Manchester United. He continues to be one of the top footballers in England, as well as internationally. He and his wife, Coleen married in 2008 and they live in Prestbury, Cheshire. The couple had their first baby, Kali Wayne Rooney, in 2009.
