Youssef Msakni, born 20 October 1990, is a twenty-one year old Tunisian professional footballer. He plays attacking midfield or as a winger in an attacking role. Msakni is a member of Esperance Sportive de Tunis, or ES Tunis, the current champions of the Tunisian Ligue Professionelle 1, the holders of the Tunisian domestic cup, and the winners of the 2011 CAF Champions League, a competition involving the best club teams throughout Africa.
Msakni began his professional career in the youth ranks of Stade Tunisian, another club based in the capital city of Tunis. In 2008, he joined ES Tunis and blossomed in a substitute role. Scoring five goals in his first season with the team, he contributed immediately to Esperance’s return to the top of the Tunisian Ligue table. ES Tunis has won the league each of the three years Msakni has been with the club. They won the Arab Club Champions League in 2009 and were runners-up for the CAF Champions League in 2010. In the 2011 season, the rising star contributed ten goals in twenty-two appearances and added a Tunisian triple crown to his resume–ES Tunis won the league, the domestic cup, and the African champions league, in which the young attacker scored five goals in eight appearances.
Youssef Msakni has already distinguished himself on an international club level, and he is a rising star of the Tunisian national team. He previously had ten appearances and two goals with the Tunisian under-17 squad, but he saw his first national duty with the main squad in the 2010 African Cup of Nations. Msakni is currently playing in the 2012 cup, and he has posted two goals in three appearances thus far.
Opposing managers in the competition have taken note of his attacking threat. In an interview with GNA Sports in Franceville, the coach of the Ghana national team said of Msakni, “Youssef has very high technical ability. He dribbles, tackles, and his ability to take on a team on his own is very impressive. He sometimes spearheads and acts like an auxiliary attacker.” Youssef Msakni has already built a strong reputation as a young African international.
